The Theatre Experience Is a Product Promise, Not a Bigger Screen

The future of movie theatres will not be won by jargon alone — IMAX, 4K, laser, HDR, Atmos, EPIQ — but by a repeatable promise: every seat, every show, every format decision must make the audience feel that the film was worth leaving home for.
Who Is V. Senthil Kumar?
V. Senthil Kumar is the Co-Founder of Qube Cinema, one of the companies that helped shape digital cinema distribution, mastering, and exhibition in India. His credibility comes from living inside the operational details most audiences only encounter as confusing acronyms: DCPs, KDMs, projection standards, sound calibration, cinema security, quality-control rooms, and the shift from film to digital.
That makes his perspective unusually useful. He is not arguing like a fan defending one brand of screen. He is explaining the theatre as a technical system, a social system, and a business promise — where the smallest failures in brightness, sound, seating, delivery, or trust can damage the magic people think they are simply buying with a ticket.
The Core Thesis: The Theatre Must Earn Attention
Senthil Kumar’s simplest argument is also the strongest: people go to theatres because the environment changes their relationship with the story. At home, the viewer is the master. The remote, phone, pause button, snack break, and attention drift all belong to the viewer. In a theatre, the viewer becomes “slave to the screen.” Miss a moment and it is gone. That constraint creates focus.
The second advantage is collective emotion. Audiences alter each other. Laughter spreads. Silence deepens. Frustration becomes communal. A mediocre experience can become memorable because everyone reacts together; a poor film can become almost enjoyable because the audience collectively rejects it. For Senthil, the “maximum enjoyment” of cinema is not only visual scale. It is shared attention.

This is why premium formats matter, but also why they are easy to misunderstand. A bigger screen by itself is not the product. The product is a designed state of immersion: no obstruction, correct sightlines, controlled brightness, high contrast, calibrated sound, comfortable seating, and a picture mastered for the room.
Nolan, IMAX, and Turning Cinema Into an Event
Christopher Nolan’s 70mm IMAX advocacy is a useful case study because it blends craft, scarcity, and marketing. Senthil notes that shooting on 70mm IMAX cameras is not a casual creative preference. The cameras are physically large, loud, and difficult to work with. Hollywood productions depend heavily on live sound, so a noisy camera creates real production constraints. For Nolan’s work, a blimp or casing can reduce noise, but it makes an already big camera bigger and heavier.
Many filmmakers would avoid the pain: shoot digital, fix sound later, or choose a more convenient capture path. Nolan’s insistence creates a powerful aura: if only a limited number of venues can show the final approved experience, the viewing itself becomes an event. Senthil acknowledges the criticism — does that make cinema exclusionary? — but also points out the commercial power. In an era where theatres must constantly give people reasons to leave home, scarcity can create desire.
The important distinction is that Nolan’s preferred medium should be understood as his creative choice, not an objective universal standard for all cinema. Senthil compares it to a painter and a photographer capturing the same scene through different media. Film can be beautiful because a creator wants that texture. Digital can be equally valid — and technically, modern digital cameras can capture extraordinary resolution, dynamic range, and low-light detail.
EPIQ’s Bet: Consistency Beats Terminology
Qube’s EPIQ format is framed not as magic, but as a commitment to a controlled, repeatable theatrical experience. Senthil is careful not to over-mystify it: EPIQ is meant to deliver the “perfect cinema experience.” That means wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling screen design where possible; clear sightlines from every seat; no heads blocking the image; high-contrast lenses; correct black levels; studio-quality sound; and projection that stays faithful show after show.
At the time of the conversation, Senthil says there are 12 EPIQ theatres, with a latest one opening in Tenkasi. Tamil Nadu locations include screens in Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Tenkasi, and Madurai, while Chennai is still underserved for EPIQ. The ambition is not merely to attach a label to an auditorium. It is to make the label a promise: if the audience chooses EPIQ, the room will be good.
This is where EPIQ’s comparison with IMAX becomes interesting. Senthil gives IMAX full respect for creating the premium large format category and the culture around special mastering. But he also argues that EPIQ, being newer, can keep screens closer to one standard from the start. IMAX has a longer history: film screens, digital conversions, later laser upgrades, and therefore unavoidable variation across locations. EPIQ’s advantage is the ability to begin with a narrower rulebook.
Why Screen Size Is Not the Whole Experience
The common assumption is that the largest screen always gives the best experience. Senthil’s answer is more precise: size matters, but only inside a well-designed geometry. A smaller screen can still feel excellent if the seating position, viewing angle, screen coverage, and room design are right. Even a home theatre can be fantastic if designed correctly, though most homes cannot easily create that architecture.
For EPIQ, the best seat is roughly two-thirds of the way back from the front and near the horizontal center — the same zone from which calibration is measured. But the goal is to reduce the number of bad seats as much as possible. A premium format should not require the audience to know secret seat mathematics just to avoid a compromised view.
That same principle explains why Qube resists relaxing its EPIQ rules. More auditoriums could qualify if standards were loosened, but then the brand would stop meaning what it is supposed to mean. For a premium experience, growth without fidelity is a form of dilution.
The Sound Problem: Loudness Is Often an Operational Failure
One of the most useful sections is Senthil’s explanation of why some Tamil films feel painfully loud, especially during hero-elevation scenes. The target idea behind cinema sound standards is simple: if a theatre plays at level 7, the audience should hear what the director and mixer heard in the mixing theatre. Digital cinema was designed so every screening could be the exact same.
Reality is messier. Human hearing attenuates after exposure to loud sound. Spend fifteen minutes in a loud club and the outside world temporarily sounds muted. The same thing happens during a long mix session. Senthil says mix engineers and creative teams may keep raising levels because their ears have adjusted. The healthy practice would be to mix a reel, spend 15–20 minutes in a quiet area, then return. Time pressure often prevents that.
The result cascades. A mix becomes too loud. Theatres fear damaging center, left, or right speakers. Audiences complain. Exhibitors begin using informal formulas: play Tamil films lower, Hindi films at another level, Telugu films with a different reduction. Senthil calls that a bad situation. The correct state is that the creative team does not go overboard and the theatre can play the film exactly as intended.
KDM Delays Are Usually Not About the KDM
KDM — the Key Delivery Message that permits encrypted digital cinema playback — has become a public excuse for delayed screenings. Senthil’s clarification is blunt: the KDM itself is only a tiny file. The larger issue is often that the movie delivery is late.
There are two main causes. First, creative teams keep fine-tuning until the last minute because they want the final version to be as perfect as possible before reaching audiences. That compresses delivery timelines for everyone downstream. Second, Tamil cinema in particular can face finance-related release bottlenecks. Producers borrow, promise repayment before release, and expect advances from territories to settle obligations. If one piece is delayed, the release chain tightens and the technical symptom audiences hear about becomes “KDM has not arrived.”
That explanation matters because it separates visible failure from root cause. The public label is technical. The true problem may be workflow discipline, delivery compression, or financing friction.
4K, Laser, HDR, and the Trap of Shiny Words
Senthil pushes back against the way audiences get conditioned by technical labels. 4K matters only above a certain screen size, and even then it is not automatically better. A high-contrast 2K image can look better than a low-contrast 4K image. A well-maintained xenon projector can rival the best laser experience, while a poorly maintained setup can underperform despite impressive terminology.
Laser’s operational advantage is stability. Once set up, it can run for five to seven years with less maintenance drift. Xenon requires active management as the lamp ages: power must be raised, and eventually the lamp must be replaced. Theatre economics sometimes delay maintenance, which directly affects brightness and image quality.
The real future, in Senthil’s view, is HDR theatrical presentation. Home televisions and streaming services already expose audiences to HDR, but theatrical HDR becomes extraordinary when paired with cinema-scale sound and calibrated presentation. He points to LED screens — essentially massive cinema-grade displays with sound behind the screen — capable of far higher brightness, such as 300 nits or more. Qube has already set one up in Hyderabad, and Tamil Nadu is expected to get one as well. Under the brand EPIQ Luxon, this is the direction he sees as inevitable.
Film vs Digital Is a Creative Choice, Not a Religious War
Senthil’s view of film versus digital is practical. Digital cameras today are technically as good as, or better than, film in many scenarios. He references camera shootouts where multiple digital and film cameras captured the same dark, light, action, snow, and desert scenes. Over time, the need for such comparisons faded because every serious digital camera crossed a threshold of quality. In dark scenes especially, digital often sees more usable detail than film.
But that does not make film obsolete as a creative medium. If a filmmaker wants the texture, workflow, and discipline of film, that choice deserves appreciation. Nolan’s 70mm preference is real because it reflects Nolan’s vision. It does not mean every digital film is lesser, or that audiences should treat one format as the only authentic way to experience cinema.
Piracy, Trust, and Invisible Watermarks
Digital cinema security was built around both quality and protection. But Senthil separates the chain into stages. Post-production is a trusted environment where work may be unencrypted because artists and technicians need access. Mastering facilities receive unencrypted content to create encrypted DCPs. Theatrical playback is encrypted and protected by KDMs.
Leaks can still happen at trust boundaries. A recent Tamil release issue, he notes, appears to have been a post-production leak rather than a normal theatrical failure. Theatre capture is another risk because modern camcorders are excellent; a camera on a tripod can create a surprisingly convincing copy. But theatrical systems can embed invisible watermarks. With roughly five minutes of footage, the source theatre and showtime can be identified. More theatres are also using audience-facing CCTV to detect recording behavior.
A Practical Framework for Judging a Theatre

For Anand and Diffie, the most transferable lesson is that a technical product becomes valuable when it turns invisible quality into a reliable promise. Movie audiences do not want to understand KDMs, contrast ratios, DCP bitrates, lamp aging, or mix-stage fatigue. They want to know: if I buy this ticket, will the experience be worth it? Frontend engineering teams are similar. They do not want another testing acronym. They want to know: if Diffie is in my workflow, will visual regressions, broken states, and browser-specific bugs stop surprising me?
EPIQ’s strategy suggests a useful positioning move: sell not just capability, but confidence by standard. Qube can say EPIQ means sightlines, contrast, sound, seating, and mastering discipline. Diffie can define an analogous promise for AI browser testing: critical flows exercised in realistic browsers, visual changes reviewed with context, failures explained in developer language, flaky signals reduced, and release confidence made repeatable.
The KDM discussion is especially relevant to GTM. Users often describe the visible symptom — “tests are flaky,” “QA slows us down,” “bugs still escape,” “Playwright is hard to maintain.” The buyer’s real root cause may be last-minute release compression, missing ownership, untested UI states, poor staging data, or lack of confidence in visual review. Diffie’s ICP work should separate public complaint from underlying workflow failure, then speak directly to the operator who feels that pain.
The premium-format lesson also argues against generic AI positioning. “AI browser testing” can become the same kind of shiny term as 4K or laser: technically impressive but easy to ignore. The stronger claim is operational: Diffie gives frontend teams a dependable browser-testing experience that keeps working across releases. Like EPIQ, the brand should mean a standard customers can trust before they understand every technical detail behind it.
